WealthPath

Overview

WealthPath is a social-impact initiative from Enactus at the University of Calgary that makes financial literacy engaging for young people. Learners move through illustrated lesson maps covering money, banking, budgeting, income and financial planning, with short videos, interactive quizzes and unlockable progress.

The platform has been tested with approximately 140 students and used to teach more than 120 students in rural Alberta. Its financial content was reviewed by ATB Financial, and the project placed third in the Youth Empowerment category at the 2026 Enactus Regional Finals.

How it holds together

WealthPath is split into two halves. The learner-facing site is a TypeScript, React and Next.js app styled with Tailwind CSS and hosted on Vercel. Behind it, a Python and Flask API on Render stores everything in MySQL.

That API is a set of 22 REST endpoints covering sign-in through Firebase Authentication, learner profiles, quiz attempts and grading, module progress and Stripe payments. Profile photos live in Google Cloud Storage, and Firebase Analytics shows how learners move through the lessons.

As one of the developers on the Enactus team, I help build and maintain this stack across the frontend and the API.

AI-evaluated answers

Most quiz platforms stop at multiple choice. WealthPath also lets learners explain a concept in their own words. A grading service sends the question, the learning objective and the answer to an LLM, which returns a score with partial credit and written feedback straight away. OpenAI's GPT-4o mini grades answers today, with Gemini configured as an alternative provider.

The same engine handles multiple choice, multi-select, fill-in-the-blank, matching and sorting questions, keeps every attempt and the learner's best score, and enforces lesson prerequisites on the server rather than only in the interface.
